Nat Baldwin Revisits 'Most Valuable Player' for Demos Record, Shares New Dave Longstreth-Equipped Track

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Sep 11, 2013

It's been five years since Dirty Projectors' bassist Nat Baldwin delivered his 2008 solo set Most Valuable Player, but a batch of demos will highlight the songs anew for a new collection called Dome Branches. Western Vinyl puts the set in stores November 12.

A press release notes that these early versions of the songs, which ultimately made it onto Most Valuable Player, were recorded between 2005 and 2006. Joining Baldwin on the recordings are Dirty Projectors bandmate Dave Longstreth on guitar and electronics, as well as guitarist Djim Reynolds, drummers Nathan Horton and Tim Keiper, Matt Bauder on Clarinets, and Jessica Pavone on viola.

At the time, many of the songs had yet to be premiered live and apparently there's "a remarkable raw energy" to the recordings, due in part to Longstreth never having heard the songs before hitting the studio. His guitar parts were improvised on the spot.

While the tracklisting differs from Most Valuable Player, Dome Branches features alternate takes of nine of the 10 songs from the 2008 LP. Only "Enter the Light Out" is excluded from this embryonic offering. You can stream the demo version of "Look She Said," featuring Longstreth, over here.

In other news, Baldwin is apparently working on material for a follow-up to his 2011 LP People Changes, which is expected to arrive in 2014. He's also touring this fall, with a Canadian set scheduled at Toronto's Monarch Tavern on September 24. You can see the tour itinerary beneath the Dome Branches info.
