Mykki Blanco and R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe Make Muted Magic on "Family Ties"

The rapper forgoes aggressive bars for a captivating croon

Mykki Blanco has dropped a video for new single "Family Ties," featuring legendary R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe.

While Stipe might seem like an odd fit for such a guest verse, the track has enough open space that his world-weary croon both supports the music and fits right into it. The real shocker here, however, isn't Stipe's verse. It's Blanco's entire performance, which is more meditative than previous outings.

In a press release, Blanco said of the track, "'Family Ties' is the first song where I sonically found my voice and I mean that in a very literal way." That's no joke. Backed by pensive but persistent bass, swirling guitar and saxophone, Blanco spends the entire track gently singing, with no rapping at all.

"I'm thrilled to have worked on 'Family Ties' — I love how the song turned out," Stipe added in a statement.

The track was produced by Falty DL and the video was directed by Kit Monteith. Check out the song and video below.

Blanco's most recent release, 2021's Broken Hearts and Beauty Sleep, featured guests like Blood Orange and Jamila Woods.
