My Hotel Year

The Curse

BY Sam SutherlandPublished Jun 1, 2004

Similar in sound to the driving pop-emo of Hot Rod Circuit, My Hotel Year rely heavily on their three vocalists to hold the songs up with impressive harmony and effective sonic texturing. This unique vocal approach helps set the band apart, because while their songs are nothing to scoff at, they don’t offer anything truly original. The harmonies present on The Curse, however, elevate the record to whole new level. By layering their three voices in a tasteful but clear manner, the resulting effect is quite stirring without being overwrought. The songs themselves are fine examples of standard pop-emo fare, and they certainly show a great deal of promise. Given a few years, My Hotel Year could prove serious contenders in the emo arena.
