A new archival release from Mort Garson has been announced. The Canadian-born electronic pioneer and composer's Journey to the Moon and Beyond arrives July 21 via Sacred Bones.

Born in Saint John, NB, to Russian Jewish refugees, Garson is best known for his 1976 album Mother Earth's Plantasia, an LP of "warm earth music" composed on Moog synthesizers "for plants and the people who love them." The cult classic was officially reissued by Sacred Bones in 2019, and there's a chance you might have heard its opening track in a TV spot for TurboTax earlier this year.

Now, Journey to the Moon and Beyond rockets through Garson's archives to collect previously unreleased and newly unearthed compositions for film soundtracks, advertisements, National Geographic specials and projects that weren't identified on the corresponding tapes.

"Moon Journey," which you can hear below alongside a visualizer, soundtracked the live broadcast of the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing on CBS News. A release notes how before the master tapes were dusted off for release, this particular piece of audio was presumed lost for decades.

Garson passed away in 2008 at age 83. Journey to the Moon and Beyond will arrive a day after both the anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing and what would have been the artist's 99th birthday.
