Mint Records Signs Hot Panda and Kellarissa

BY Josiah HughesPublished Jun 12, 2008

Following some amazing new material from Vancougar and the Awkward Stage, Vancouver-based indie rock powerhouse Mint Records has announced a fresh batch of signees.

First on the docket is Hot Panda, an Edmonton-based indie pop quartet who Mint describes as "a swath of tunes that sound like anything and everything. Britpop, gypsy swing, opera solos, Robert Pollard style lo-fi jangles, (and) glammy Roxy Music keyboards.” After self-releasing their Whale Headed Girl EP in 2007, the band took to the road and eventually recorded their debut full-length in Winnipeg. Leading up to its release, the band will be embarking on another Canada-wide tour for most of June and July.

Second is Vancouver’s Kellarissa, the solo debut of Larissa Loyva, who formerly contributed to records from P:ano and the Choir Practice. Held together by haunting synths and Loyva’s arresting vocals, her debut album Flamingo will be released by Mint sometime this year. She has two dates slated at Vancouver’s Railway Club in July, but in the meantime, peep the trippy video for "Niagara” below, which was taken from her Tropical Depression EP.
