Fabric 43

Like it or not, the Fabric series has become the place for high-minded DJs to show off their high-minded DJ tastes. Yes, this had made for some stellar mixes but it’s also made for a load of rigid, uber-serious ones, with contributors more often out to earn a cool badge than simply rock the party. As a result, rarely do you turn to Fabric for a good time, making Metro Area’s new contribution a welcomed exception. Not since Justice’s rejected mix have an act had so much fun on a Fabric comp, with Metro Area’s Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani throwing down a light-hearted blend of ’80s disco, soul, house and new wave, hipster-approved or not. What this makes for is an eclectic yet surprisingly cohesive, mix, which finds artists such as Heaven 17, Devo and Ministry rubbing shoulders with the likes of Gary’s Gang, Jean-Luc Ponty, Midway and Skratch. Is it a bit cheesy? Yes. Will it make you shake it like you just don’t care? Definitely.
