"We will get there eventually … but not in the next couple of years, I'm sorry to say. I just want you to know, I love Toronto."

Despite the fact that their new album 72 Seasons could have taken titular inspiration from its climate, Metallica and the city of Toronto will remain passing ships in the night for the foreseeable future. According to guitarist Kirk Hammett, fans in the 416 will have to wait at least three years to see the band perform.

In a new interview with the Toronto Star, Hammett broke the news that there are no plans to add a Toronto date to Metallica's massive 2023–2024 world tour any time soon.

"Probably sometime after those two tour legs," the guitarist told journalist Nick Krewen of the dates the band have scheduled through to next September. "As it stands nowadays, because we're just older and we have other lives, we can only tour for a certain amount of time every year."

Hammett continued, "So what we're trying to do is just pace ourselves and schedule so many shows. This way, we're able to play these shows well and take care of everything else in our lives."

"You know, Toronto is definitely on the list," he added. "And we will get there eventually … but not in the next couple of years, I'm sorry to say. I just want you to know, I love Toronto. I love the city and have spent time there, had a few shows there and [side project with Robert Trujillo] the Wedding Band has played there. It's just a great, great place."

Metallica's last Toronto concert was at the Rogers Centre in 2017. For now, the closest Torontonians can get is by making the trek to see the new vinyl pressing plant owners in Montreal this August or Detroit in November.

Sad, but true.
