The Melvins Gear Up for "Lite" Album, Collaborative Singles Series with OFF!, Fucked Up

BY Alex HudsonPublished Feb 20, 2012

Last year, sludge metal survivors the Melvins went soft when frontman Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Crover toured with bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3) and played a selection of the softer (relatively speaking) material from the group's back catalogue. Now, the appropriately dubbed Melvins Lite are gearing up to release an album of their own.

The awesomely titled Freak Puke will arrive on June 5 via Ipecac Recordings. This comes hot on the heels of a busy 2011 that saw the band release a live album, plus a vinyl box set.

What's more, the Melvins' usual four-piece lineup (the heavy, non-Lite one) will be touring the U.S. with Unsane in April and May (see the dates below). Just for the event, the two bands will be releasing a split seven-inch through Amphetamine Reptile that will find them covering one another's songs.

In a post on their official website, the Melvins also confirmed that Amphetamine Reptile will be releasing a series of twelve-inch singles, one for each track on last year's Sugar Daddy Live. These 13 records will each be backed with a B-side from a different artist.

The band explain, "We can't list all the tracks now, but some are previously released material by defunct bands, and some new exclusive material from current bands. Other bands confirmed so far: Off, Fucked Up, Mudhoney, Butthole Surfers, Tweak Bird."

In other words, 2012 is shaping up to be a very good year for Melvins fans.
