Mavado

Mr. Brooks... A Better Tomorrow

BY Melissa BesseyPublished May 12, 2009

Whenever a gangster figure turns to God in their music, critics turn sceptical, and this scenario is no different for Mavado's new album, Mr. Brooks... A Better Tomorrow. The intro, "David's Psalm," sets a biblical tone that's carried throughout the album, for both slow tunes and dancehall bangers alike. His overall message is "Money over gun," indicating that he's still a gangster but one no longer promoting violence, a message he feels Jamaica's ghetto youth need to hear. Though critics may be quick to dismiss this album due to Mavado's change from straight-up hardcore gangster to preacher of Jah, Rastafari, heed my advice and listen to this album. "So Special" and "In Di Car Back" are sure to be summer club anthems and "Life of a G" gives you a little taste of that classic gangster sound that we've all grown to love and expect from Mavado. Make no mistake, Mavado is still a bad man for life and this is a great album for anyone who loves dancehall music.
