After teasing the arrival of new music in May, Mastodon's return appears imminent with the arrival of a new teaser.

Through their website, the band have launched a pre-save option for something new dubbed "Light the Torch." Metal Injection points out that it could be the completed version of a rumoured track titled "Fallen Torches," which features vocals from Neurosis frontman and regular album guest Scott Kelly.

UPDATE (7/31, 11:30 a.m. ET): Mastodon have now shared "Fallen Torches," which you can hear below. It will appear on a new rarities comp titled Medium Rarities, which arrives on September 11 via Reprise.

While Mastodon had intended to release the song with Kelly ahead of an early 2019 tour, it ultimately was never released. As previously reported, guitarist Bill Kelliher confirmed in May that the band had been demoing new material for follow-up to 2017's Emperor of Sand.

"We were kind of right in the middle of it...we had about, I don't know, 20 rough songs recorded right before this [pandemic] hit and it just totally put the brakes on it," Kelliher said. "I'm actually leaving tomorrow for Atlanta. We're gonna get back together and try to get back into finishing a few things that we started and see where we get."

That interview also saw Kelliher reveal that the band contributed a song to Bill & Ted Face the Music. He recently leant his guitar chops to a star-studded Rush cover.
