Last year, we learned that celebrated filmmaker Martin Scorsese was directing a documentary about the Beatles' George Harrison. Now, thanks to HBO, the film will be making its North American TV debut. The station will air George Harrison: Living in the Material World in two parts on October 5 and 6.
This TV screening will coincide with a book of the same title, which will come out via Abrams Books in September. The collection of photographs, letters, diaries and memorabilia was overseen by Harrison's widow, Olivia. She also co-produced the film with Scorsese and Exclusive Media Group boss Nigel Sinclair.
The film was edited by David Tedeschi, who previously worked with Scorsese on the rock doc No Direction Home: Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones concert flick Shine a Light.
Living in the Material World will features interviews with Eric Clapton, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, George Martin, Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, Tom Petty, Phil Spector, Ringo Starr and Jackie Stewart. As previously reported, it traces Harrison's life from his Liverpool upbringing to his rise to become one of the world's most celebrated rock stars. Olivia Harrison opened up the family archives for the project, and said, "It would have given George great joy to know that Martin Scorsese has agreed to tell his story."
There's no word as to whether the film will come to North American cinemas.
