While San Diego sci-fi grindcore vets the Locust are currently on hiatus, the band's music will take flight once again via a new compendium of the early part of their career called Molecular Genetics from the Gold Standard Labs. Anti- will issue the sprawling, 44-song release on CD and LP July 31.
As you might expect by its title, the collection gathers material released on the defunct Gold Standard Labs label, helmed by former VSS/Angel Hair singer Sonny Kay, running from the group's 1997 self-titled single up to their side of a split seven-inch with Melt Banana in 2002. Other releases preserved here include the outfit's triumphant 1998 self-titled LP, the Locust's material off their 2000 split seven-inch with Arab on Radar, and 2001's Flight of the Wounded Locust seven-inch single.
If you missed out on these the first time around, you can expect plenty of blast beats, the oscillated carnival noise of a Juno 60 synthesizer, multi-member snuff film shrieks, and ridiculously long, non-sequitur song titles (see "The Half Eaten Sausage Would Like to See You in His Office"). Also, while the unit are known for their quirky and carefully tailored superhero-style costumes, this was the street clothes period for the band.
Despite issuing a Peel Sessions twelve-inch in 2010, which was actually recorded in 2001, the Locust haven't delivered any new material since 2007's New Erections.
