Listen to the Weakerthans' Live at the Burton Cummings Theatre Now on Exclaim.ca
Published Mar 16, 2010They may not have technically released a new album in three years, but between spending their Christmas holiday as Jim Bryson's studio backing band, playing shows and festivals the world over, and lead singer John K. Samson putting out a couple singles, the Weakerthans are busier than ever. Next Tuesday (March 23), the folk punk Winnipeg rockers will release a CD/DVD package entitled Live at the Burton Cummings Theatre via Anti- Records. Captured last April, it immortalizes an epic hometown concert, jacked up by the flare of fiddle, trumpet and female vox.

This is the quintessential celebration album, selecting 18 tracks from group's decade-plus musical career, with the CD/DVD overflowing with the Weakerthans' ultra Canadian sound. Guaranteed, fans of our golden Olympic victories will be pumping up the volume on excitable songs like the "Tournament of Hearts," while the band's literary allusions will leave many wondering how awesome it would be if all English lit education was this accessible and sounded so good. Even the cover art is applaudable: a colourful abstract work of art, courtesy of Weakerthans bassist Greg Smith.
Live at the Burton Cummings Theatre is already available for pre-order here and a few Canadian live dates have recently been announced here, so once this release has whet your appetite, you can live the experience for yourself.
Live at the Burton Cummings Theatre will be streaming on Exclaim.ca until March 22. To read more about the album, simply head in this direction for a recent Exclaim! interview with the band's John K. Samson.
