It goes without saying that Neil Young is a big archives guy. And while we couldn't put it on our new Canadian releases playlist, the decidedly anti-Spotify legend has shared a previously unheard track called "Timberline."
Toast — his shelved 2001 collaboration with Crazy Horse — is set to finally see release next Friday (July 8). In addition to our first taste with Deep Purple-esque "Standing in the Light of Love," second preview track "Timberline" is a fuzzed-out blur about a lumberjack, apparently.
"The scene changes to a religious guy who just lost his job," Young wrote of the song in the album announcement last month. "He's turning on Jesus. He can't cut any more trees. He's a logger."
Rife with tension, it's a tableau that certainly aligns with the musician's previous declaration that he once thought Toast was "so sad that I couldn't put it out."
Listen to "Timberline" below.
Last week, Young announced the forthcoming release of yet another archival treasure: Noise & Flowers, a live album and concert film recorded during his 2019 European tour with Promise of the Real.
