Published Jun 20, 2011Wolf Parade fans have had a rough year so far, as the Montreal-based indie rock group recently called it quits. The positive side, however, is that the members will have more time to focus on their other projects. Co-frontman Dan Boeckner hasn't hesitated, with his Handsome Furs project releasing their third album Sound Kapital this month.
The record will be available in stores on June 28 via Sub Pop, but until then we've arranged a free steam of the album here for our Canadian readers.
A project Boeckner shares with his wife Alexei Perry, Handsome Furs have already carved a unique path in the indie pop landscape with their beat-heavy rockisms. On Sound Kapital, they emphasize the electronics, having written the entire record on keyboards and drum machines.
Setting out to disprove the myth that electronic music has to be "cold, alien and unfeeling," they've succeeded with a batch of loud, strong and gritty anthems that maintain a rock'n'roll spirit despite a near total lack of guitars.
Because of their busy touring schedule, Sound Kapital was recorded very quickly in Montreal by Howard Bilerman and Wolf Parade cohort Arlen Thompson at the famed Hotel2Tango studio. The resulting production value strikes the perfect fidelity between professional studio quality and practice space heart.
Sound Kapital will be streaming in Canada on Exclaim.ca until June 26. You can see all Handsome Furs' upcoming dates here.
