Listen to Boris Cover Wham!'s "Last Christmas"

"Here in Japan, it is customary to give gifts at Christmas. We hope this Christmas will be the 'Last Christmas' of COVID-19"

Last month, Boris announced their 27th album W and revealed that they'd signed to Sacred Bones, and today they've shared a Bandcamp-only holiday single called Noël that includes a droning, stormy cover of Wham!'s holiday classic "Last Christmas."

"Last Christmas" has obviously been done to death, but Boris manage to tease out the song's inherent melancholy without getting all schmaltzy — it'd make a solid addition to anybody's moody alt-Christmas playlist.

"This is a Christmas present for everyone who lives with the various restrictions stemming from COVID-19," Boris said in a statement. "Here in Japan, it is customary to give gifts at Christmas. We hope this Christmas will be the 'Last Christmas' of COVID-19."

"Last Christmas" is actually the B-side to the holiday single, with side A being a rework of "Pardon?" — from 2011's New Album — by UK singer-songwriter Lauren Auder and French producer Dviance.

"When Lauren Auder replied to our post and told us 'I love this album very much,' we were very excited. We really like Lauren's voice, atmosphere, music and video work. We replied back that we would like to work together someday soon." Boris said. "New Album is an album that has received various criticisms before, however, like Lauren, we also happen to love this album very much. Now, 10 years later, we have asked Lauren to sing a new interpretation from it."

W is arriving January 21.
