Lil Wayne Sues Universal for $40 Million over Drake and Nicki Minaj Royalties

Sadly, it looks as if Lil Wayne has reached the litigious period of his career. Sure, he's still making music with the likes of 2 Chainz and Rich Homie Quan, but Weezy's name mostly pops up via an onslaught of lawsuits.

The rapper and his former mentor Birdman have been suing one another for a while, and now Lil Wayne has lawyered up once more. This time, he's got his eyes on Cash Money parent company Universal Music.

As The Hollywood Reporter explains, Lil Wayne filed suit against Universal yesterday (March 28), claiming the label owes him $40 million US for the discovery of highly profitable Young Money artists Drake and Nicki Minaj (and, to a lesser extent, Tyga).

The lawsuit alleges that Universal has been using money they owe Wayne to instead pay back a $100 million debt that Cash Money accrued over the years.

That said, paying pack Cash Money's loan is not Lil Wayne's problem. In fact, the lawsuit explains that the rapper signed a deal in 2003 that would allow him 49 percent of profits (and 49 percent of the masters) for the artists he found and nurtured through his Young Money label.

A spokesperson for Universal responded to the lawsuit in a statement, saying, "It should be no surprise that we learned of the lawyer's complaint through the news media. We don't intend to dignify this with further public comment except to say that we will vigorously contest it and that the merits of our case will carry the day."

Only time will tell if Lil Wayne has any footing in this lawsuit. Either way, here's hoping his luck changes in one way or another sometime soon.
