Leaked Kanye Film Wasn't Finished, Spike Jonze Says

As we previously reported, Spike Jonze recently made a short film with not-dead rapper Kanye West entitled We Were Once a Fairytale. The 14-minute clip is set to "See You in My Nightmares," a track from last year's 808s and Heartbreak, and features West playing himself, drinking heavily and doing battle with his demons (seriously, he performs a self-exorcism with a knife).

On Sunday (October 18), Kanye posted the film on his blog, but removed it shortly after without explanation. Now, Jonze has revealed that the version posted was not the final cut. Addressing the leak, the director told the New York Times that "This is the first time it's happened to me and it is a weird feeling, like, 'Wait a second - I wasn't ready to put that out!" As for Kayne's role in leaking the film, Jonze said that "I think he was like, 'Oh, it's out. I'll link to it.'"

The video builds on the themes of loss that West explored on 808s and Heartbreak, which was inspired by his mother's death and the breakdown of his relationship. "We rehearsed the night before we shot, and talked about trying to get to that raw place, that sad, pathetic, drunken, lost place," said Jonze. "I told him, 'the more shameless it is, the more pathetic it is, the better.' He just went for it."

Despite his disappointment that the film is out early, Jonze isn't mad at Kanye for his role in the leak, saying, "I don't know what the reception is going to be, but I love making stuff with him. I love the guy."

The final version of We Were Once a Fairytale will be available on Tuesday (October 27) on iTunes.
