Star City Baby

BY Cam LindsayPublished Jan 1, 2006

Though summer may have ended, it's never a bad time to release that great summertime album. Milwaukee's the Lackloves have released a record that emphasises everything great about true, classic pop rock - like the importance of a tambourine, handclaps, jangly guitars and the friendliest melodies. The influence of such pop stalwarts as Redd Kross, Big Star and '60s-era Kinks are all over singer Mike Jarvis's songs. The nicest thing about these songs is how they complement one another. With a lot of unknown pop records, a sure-fire single is thrown in for some mass appeal, yet Star City Baby avoids anything of the sort, aiming for the status of "classic" instead of "one hit wonder."
