If you've ever bought a guitar on the internet, there's a chance it might have once belonged to Metallica axe-man Kirk Hammett, who has revealed that he often quietly sells his guitars on eBay or Reverb.
It's common practice for musicians to sell their old gear online, but most who are famous enough hold their own auctions and drive up the price by attaching their name to it. Not Hammett, however.
"I'll list them on eBay or Reverb and I don't say they're mine," he told Metal Hammer earlier this month. "I get rid of a lot of guitars that way!"
As for why he sells so many instruments, he explained, "I get anxiety because I believe guitars should be played. I don't believe in just storing them away and forgetting about them — I feel guilty! So I have been on a quest to shrink my collection and get rid of the ones I don't play." He added that he has also shrunk his collection by trading guitars, as well as simply giving some away.
He said, "There were a few that were only ever used on Death Magnetic — I played them on that tour, then as soon as that tour stopped they went into storage again as I'm not playing those songs." He has guitars he hasn't played since that tour 15 years ago.
