Kelela is back, and all is right in the world. After some very funny and self-aware teasing, the songwriter has broken her five-year hiatus with "Washed Away," an ambient blur of a track that finds Kelela vocalizing through a cloud of synths.
"I love a banger, but for the first point of contact out of my hiatus, it felt more honest to lead with an ambient heart-check," Kelela said in press materials.
"I specifically want to speak to marginalized Black folk and highlight the work we do to find renewal in a world that's built to make us feel inadequate," she continued. "This song is the soundtrack to the relief we find after going inward."
The track was produced by Berlin-based producer Yo van Lenz. The video for "Washed Away" was directed by Yasser Abubeker and shot in Ethiopia's Danakil Depression.
