Kelela has shared details of her long-awaited sophomore album Raven— out February 10 via Warp — teasing the effort with new single "On the Run."
For her latest, the singer-songwriter has teamed up with Kaytranada, BAMBII, Yo van Lenz and Asmara as co-producers on the track. It follows previously released singles "Happy Ending" and "Washed Away."
Speaking with Zane Lowe of Apple Music 1, the artist shared what it was like to work with Kaytranda:
I guess one of the things that I've always done is ... not always in every song, but just in terms of over time, I've always loved to find a hybridized place between different producers and myself as a producer. That's the way that I am arranging and producing these songs is by trying to find this sort of place between several different sounds. I gave him a few directives. He's just so good at taking the ...and getting what I'm saying. Yeah, he's just ... It's amazing. I love working with him. It started really easy.
The follow-up to 2017's Take Me Apart promises to find Kelela emerging "from the tides of her higher self's oceanic orbit to explore autonomy, belonging and self-renewal as healing across the fifteen-track LP."
"I started this process from the feeling of isolation and alienation I've always had as a black femme in dance music, despite its black origins," the artist born Kelela Mizanekristos said of the project. "RAVEN is my first breath taken in the dark, an affirmation of black femme perspective in the midst of systemic erasure and the sound of our vulnerability turned to power."
