Keith Richards Says the Rolling Stones Won't Sell Publishing Rights: "It's a Sign of Getting Old"

"We might drag [our catalogue] out a bit, put some more stuff in it"

From the estate of David Bowie to Bruce Springsteen to Bob Dylan, a host of legendary musicians have parted ways with their prolific music publishing catalogues in exchange for massive compensation as of late. But according to Keith Richardsthe Rolling Stones won't be the next act to sell the publishing rights to their songs.

Addressing the trend in a new interview with CBS This Morning, the guitar god seemed reluctant to buy into the buyout — yet simultaneously rather unfazed by the idea.

"Mick [Jagger] and I have not spoken about it on a serious level," Richards said. "I don't know if we're ready to sell our [publishing] catalogue. We might drag it out a bit, put some more stuff in it," the musician teased, saying elsewhere in the interview that he, Jagger and new drummer Steve Jordan had been writing together and producing an "overwhelming" amount of new material.

The guitarist added: "The only thing about selling your catalogue: it's a sign of getting old."

In what might also be a sign of getting old, the Who's Roger Daltrey recently called the Stones a "mediocre pub band" — but time is on their side.

Richards finally quit smoking in 2020, so he's probably in his absolute prime at his young age. It's also a perfect era for Jagger walking into a bar and no one noticing.
