Kacy & Clayton (Kacy Anderson and Clayton Lithicum) are at a bit of a crossroads in their career. Still touring their Juno-nominated, acclaimed 2016 debut Strange Country, the second cousins from rural Saskatchewan are building international buzz while still being somewhat of an unknown in Canada; they've already recorded an excellent sophomore LP, The Siren's Song (due out August 18) with alt-country hero Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and, importantly, they've already 'gone electric' — the new songs are a full-band '70s country-rock production.
Joining them on stage at Hillside were Shuyler Jansen (on bass) and drummer Mike Silverman, who play on the new record, the quartet jamming together psychedelically and playing off each other like a mellow version of the Sadies backing up Sandy Denny. They were shyer with the crowd. "How are you all doing?" Anderson asked the rainy afternoon crowd, but it was a little unconvincing.
Set highlights included "Springtime of the Year" off Strange Country and a cover of Jeannie C. Riley's rollicking train song "One Toke Over the Line."
