San Francisco-based synth explorers Jonas Reinhardt have been incorporating elements of Kraut-, art- and post-rock for some time. The band's 2008 self-titled effort, which served as their Kranky debut, affirmed the group as a true synthesizer visionaries, and now they're set to follow that up with Powers of Audition.
According to a press release, the instrumentation found on the group's debut "expands here to include acoustic drum patterns, guitars, and woodwinds alongside synthesizers and electronics. Together, these voices seamlessly twist and meld into a singular aural journey. This is music of the spheres for an electronic era where new age visions are re-imagined through a lens of experimental rock."
Despite Jonas Reinhardt featuring post-rock guitar guru Phil Manley (of Trans Am and Oneida) and synth whiz Jesse Reiner (of prog pop weirdos Crime in Choir) and doesn't actually include anyone named Jonas Reinhardt, the press release refers to Reinhardt as a one-man entity, so we'll just play along.
For example, "Reinhardt says" that album's title comes from the idea that every listener has a right to interpretation, explaining, "Each of the songs is meant to engage the listener's innate power of audition to fill in intentionally left blanks. These occur throughout the recording where there is either diminished narrative resolution or explicit sectional movement meant to provoke an auditory response."
Kranky will release Powers of Audition on LP and CD on March 15. The album will be followed by a North American tour with Trans Am and Nice Nice, and includes stops in Montreal and Toronto. If the shows are anything like Reinhardt's recent Vancouver appearance, you probably won't want to miss them.
