Jon Spencer Reveals Plans for New Blues Explosion EP, Says Heavy Trash Album Underway

Speaking before their Sled Island appearance in Calgary today (June 20), Jon Spencer revealed that the Blues Explosion may release some new music before too long.

"There probably will be some kind of EP or single released in the next two or three months," Spencer tells Exclaim! "We're finishing that up now. The lead track off the EP was released already in Japan and is a cover of Beastie Boys' 'She's On It.' It's a medley of that and the Link Wray song 'Jack the Ripper.' We've been playing that at every concert we do so we figured we might as well make it available for the rest of the world.

"The rest," Spencer chuckles, "I hate going on about in case it all falls apart. It'll be good."

Spencer also reveals that he's working on more Blues Explosion archive releases — he notes that "there's still a lot of stuff in the vaults," including "a lot of great live recordings we have and interesting things" — and is back to work with Montreal-bred guitarist/singer Matt Verta-Ray on their rockabilly outfit, Heavy Trash.

"I'm trying to finish another Heavy Trash record with Matt," he asserts. "I was just in the studio with him. We tracked most of the record a long time ago and are trying to oil up the joints and get back at it."
