John Lydon Says Danny Boyle's Sex Pistols Series Is "Dead Against Everything We Once Stood For"

He hasn't watched any of the series beyond the trailer

After being shut out of Danny Boyle's Disney+ Sex Pistols series, John Lydon — a.k.a. Johnny Rotten — has had plenty of words for the director and his former bandmates, and his campaign against them and Pistol itself continues today with a new interview with The Guardian.

"It's dead against everything we once stood for," said Lydon, who lost control of the band's music in a majority-wins ruling last summer after going up against his former bandmates in court.

"The only thing you've got of value in your life, and you're going to cheapen that because you want an extra fiver? Not much of a human being there," he added in a remark presumably aimed at Steve Jones, who authored the 2016 memoir upon which Pistol is based.

He added: "How can you be truthful when you don't involve the main frontman who wrote those songs and had to take the hidings and kickings and public admonishments?"

While Lydon confirmed that he has not watched the series, he has seen the trailer, which was evidently enough for him to pass judgment on. "It's karaoke, really," he said. "The voices, the way they're talking … it sounds like a bunch of kids from Tring, all discussing the latest calamities! That ain't it at all! It's so off."

Exclaim! recently sat down with Jones, who had a much different attitude with regards to Boyles' series and the Sex Pistols' legacy.

"This TV show is good for the Sex Pistols' brand," Jones said. "I hate that word, but that seems like the word everyone uses now. There's nothing wrong with that: keeping your legacy alive. I'm all for it. I was all for Danny Boyle to do six episodes based on my book. It's a thrill, and it's an honour for that to happen."

While Lydon continues to yell about Pistol, Disney, Boyle and pretty much everything, his former bandmate wants decidedly less drama and time in the limelight.

"When we were 20, I would say it was fun," he said. "But now, I'm not interested. I ain't got the energy for that.

Besides, he'd much rather listen to Steely Dan anyway.
