Ottawa-based songwriter and Kathleen Edwards collaborator Jim Bryson has released three studio LPs since 2000, most recently 2007's Where the Bungalows Roam. On October 19, he will release album No. 4, The Falcon Lake Incident, which will feature the Weakerthans as his backing band.
This confirms reports from back in January that Bryson had recruited the Winnipeg indie rockers to back him on the release. It will be credited to Jim Bryson & the Weakerthans, and will be the songwriter's first release for MapleMusic. His previous label, Kelp, will be handling the 180-gram vinyl release.
True to its title, the album was laid down at Falcon Lake in Manitoba over six days in January. Among the guests who appear on the album are Jill Barber and Tragically Hip bassist Gord Sinclair. It was mixed by Darryl Neudorf (Neko Case, the New Pornographers) and Dave Draves (Kathleen Edwards, Gentleman Reg).
Of the secluded recording sessions, Bryson said in a press release, "It was such a great place to be and make music. Jason [Tait] was cooking, Stephen [Carroll] went on ski excursions and I generally talked to the wildlife. There seemed to be a real calming effect to recording so far away from the rest of the world. I think when we left, we all thought 'how did we just do that?'"
