Due to popular TikTok demand, Los Angeles-based 20-year-old anti-fascist singer-songwriter Jessica Mazin released her gut-wrenching acoustic demo of "the simulation is failing." on YouTube and SoundCloud in the darkness of night yesterday (May 18), leaving in its wake a trail of newly obsessed followers aghast at her lyrics' catastrophic poignancy.
Apocalyptic art can be a balm during times of real dissension, and Mazin seems to understand that well — whether it's about the actual world's ruinous state or just a response to the current seasons of end-times TV series The Last of Us and Handmaid's Tale.
Fluttering vocal runs and resonant acoustic guitar evoke the early stylings of Alanis Morissette or Phoebe Bridgers, while the subject matter conversely reflects the lyricism of the latter's rumoured beau, Bo Burnham. Check out "the simulation is failing." alongside its full lyrics below.
