Jeremy Enigk Announces New Solo Album, New Direction

Former Sunny Day Real Estate front-man Jeremy Enigk has announced he’s finally ready to get back to the rock. On an upcoming solo album, tentatively titled OK Bear, the one-time emo posterboy recently told Billboard he’s made his third solo effort one of "heavy rockers” and is set to release them via his Lewis Hollow imprint sometime this February.

With Santi Garcia and Standstill’s Ricky Falkner handling production duties, Enigk recorded the new record outside Barcelona with a new backing band made up of Spanish musicians. "These guys are Sunny Day Real Estate fans and the moment they got their hands on my songs, whether they were mellow or not, they turned them into heavy rockers," Enigk told Billboard.

However, the songwriter added that there are other influences in OK Bear as well, saying there’s a Ryan Adams-type track, as well as one inspired by the nudie suit king himself, Gram Parsons. "This is probably the first time I've ever dabbled with a country feel. Because it's me, it doesn't sound like a country song too much, but you can hear the influence," Enigk said.

He went on to say he hopes to do a tour with a full band next year but may limit that to Europe because of his newly enlisted band-mates. "I think I can do a full band in Europe, because the guys who played on the album are willing to go," he said. "I wouldn't have to fly them out. We could start in Spain and go from there. My goal is to tour as much as possible. In what incarnation, I have no idea."

In the interview, the folks over at Billboard also grilled Enigk on whether he would possibly reunite his influential Sunny Day Real Estate in the near future, with him saying nothing is planned but nothing is ruled out either. "We never really broke up — we just said we'd take a break and that we'll get back to it when we're ready," Enigk said. "But we've just not talked about it since. It may happen one day."
