It's been a prolific day for XX member Jamie Smith. Earlier today (January 6), we pointed to his remixes of English soul singer Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" and a tripped-out, wobbly, snap-beat-laden redo of FaltyDL's "Hip Love," as well as a BBC Radio 1 mix. But that's not all the dude has in store for us.
As a reminder, Jamie XX is just about ready to release his full remix of Gil Scott-Heron's 2010 disc, I'm New Here, cleverly titled We're New Here. While we already heard Smith's reworking of "New York is Killing Me," we're now privy to a second single: "I'll Take Care of U."
Smith's revamp strips the jazz cafe piano from Scott-Heron's original and slathers the cut with swarthy dance club rhythms straight out of an early '80s electro soirée in the Lower East Side, as well as the lank guitar licks that you would usually find in the XX's repertoire. The club cut, however, finds Scott-Heron's grizzled, three-pack-a-day croon relatively intact.
Check out the tune below.
We're New Here is set to be released on February 22 via XL/Young Turks.
