Things have been going well for long-running English metal act Iron Maiden lately. Well, for the most part. Sure, former singer Paul Di'Anno is headed to jail for fraud, but as for the current lineup, they're still celebrating last year's critically acclaimed The Final Frontier, which recently nabbed them a Grammy for Best Metal Performance for the tune "El Diablo." Holding onto the moment just a little bit longer, the outfit are looking to toast their recent triumph, as well as some other relatively new songs, via a new best-of compilation called From Fear to Eternity : The Best of 1990-2010.
Overlooking the well-documented late '70s to late '80s period of the band, this new set pumps up the latter half of Maiden's career, from 1990's No Prayer for the Dying straight through to The Final Frontier. It's arguable that songs like "Fear of the Dark" or "Bring Your Daughter... to the Slaughter" might not rank as high as iconic tunes like "Run to the Hills" or "Aces High," but the two-disc collection posits itself as a great primer for some forgotten classics. Including anything off 2000's Brave New World, for example, instantly juices up the quality of the set. While Maiden fans tend to be of the die-hard variety, the collection hopes to bring in some new blood to the franchise.
"From Fear to Eternity is a chance for these new fans of the band to explore Iron Maiden's rich history, with the highlights of their last eight studio albums distilled into this handy collection," reads a press statement from the band's label, EMI.
On the value side of things, besides including 23 raging Maiden hits, the two-CD set is said to be sold for the price of a single disc. That's Iron Maiden for you, always looking out for their fans. Now if only Bruce Dickinson can chart a flight for us to our nearest record store. The set will also be released digitally and as a deluxe, three-LP package.
EMI releases From Fear to Eternity: The Best of 1990-2010 in the UK May 23, but we can likely expect it to drop on these shores a day later (May 24).
