A wide range of individuals were appointed to the Order of Canada during a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa today, including a number of contributors to the country's arts community.
Famed composer Howard Shore was named an officer of the Order of Canada. In addition to creating the Oscar-winning scores to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Shore also performed in the band Lighthouse and served as Saturday Night Live's inaugural music director alongside his childhood friend Lorne Michaels.
Vancouver artist Rodney Graham was also named an officer of the Order of Canada. In addition to his famed work in the fields of film, photography, painting and sculpture, he also utilizes music in his work. He played in new wave/post-punk band UJ3RK5 with Jeff Wall in the late '70s and early '80s, and has since gone on to release solo albums backed by members of Destroyer, the New Pornographers and Neko Case's band.
Also honoured at the ceremony today were Great Big Sea frontman Alan Doyle and musician/producer Daniel Lanois, who were granted status as members of the Order of Canada.
Other arts figures that received the same title include actor Susan Coyne, dancer/choreographer/filmmaker Chantal Caron, provincial and federal minister and arts advocate Liza Frulla, Franco-Manitoban theatre director Roland François Mahé, Le Studio engineer André Perry and critic/curator/artist Meeka Walsh.
