Hillside Festival, Rockstar Mayhem Festival and Calgary Folk Music Festival Lead This Week's Can't Miss Concerts

BY Bradley Zorgdrager Published Jul 24, 2014

July is coming to an end, but fortunately Canada's streak of awesome concerts is far from over, a fact that our Can't Miss Concerts roundup for the week of July 24 to 30 certainly makes obvious. Check below for proof, then corroborate it by visiting our complete Concert Listings for other events during this week that just wouldn't fit here.

Brandon Folk, Music & Art Festival

The Brandon Folk, Music & Art Festival is celebrating three decades of bringing artists (both visual and musical) to the prairies. In doing so, they're bringing out a variety of artists from all over Canada, including Ben Caplan & the Casual Smokers (NS), Wax Mannequin (ON), Ben Sures (AB), shayne aver i grec (BC) and more, in addition to a bevy of Manitobans: isKwé, Mariachi Ghost, Chez Willi, Kaylee Jay and others. In fact, there is only one fully non-Canadian, Martin Sexton, as Cold Specks' Al Spx is a native to the true north strong and free, despite her relocation to her current home base of England.

07/25-27 Brandon, MB – Keystone Centre Grounds

Calgary Folk Music Festival

Calgary Folk Music Festival is celebrating its 35th year with a line-up including Chad VanGaalen, Rufus Wainwright, A Tribe Called Red, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, Hydra, Great Lake Swimmers, Bruce Cockburn and many more.

07/24-27 Calgary, AB – Prince's Island Park

Hillside Festival

Hillside Festival may not occur on the initially-proposed Hillside farm, but the vibe is certainly the same, 31 years later. Emphasizing diversity "of culture, of musical heritage and style, of age, geography and influence" is the name of the game here; the line-up is tailored to suit people of all ages, from all places to listen to all kinds of music: Tegan and Sara, Four Tet, Young Galaxy, Kevin Drew, PUP, Born Ruffians, Hey Rosetta!, Bry Webb, DIANA, Alvvays and Royal Canoe are just the tip of this iceberg.

07/25-27 Guelph, ON – Guelph Lake Island

MEG Festival

MEG Festival, which stands for Montreal Electronic Groove Festival, will do exactly what its name implies: have you grooving to some of the finest music around. With appearances scheduled from Benjamin Damage, Acid Arab, Danger, Suuns, Les Anticipateurs, the Driver, Mozart's Sister, Sango, Rustie and many more, MEG is the perfect combination of big name and up-and-coming talent for the electronic-centric music lover.

07/24-08/02 Montreal, QC – Various Venues

Modest Mouse

Modest Mouse are still in the midst of their lengthy Canadian tour. It's been seven years since their last album, but the band are prepping a new albumset to feature Nirvana's Krist Novoselic, so maybe some new tunes are in tow?

07/24 Edmonton, AB – Shaw Conference Centre
07/25 Regina, SK – Conexus Arts Centre Theatre
07/26 Saskatoon, SK – O'Brians Event Centre
07/28 Winnipeg, MB – Burton Cummings Theatre

The Phillips Backyard Weekender

Despite the Phillips Backyard Weekender taking place in the parking lot of Phillips Brewing Company, attendees might want to stay sober to remember the awesome weekend of music. Holy Fuck, Kim Churchill, Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires, the Original Wailers with special guests Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt and more will make sobriety more than worth it.

07/25-27 Victoria, BC – Phillips Brewery (Backyard)

Rock the Park

Weezer, Tegan and Sara, Matthew Good, July Talk, Sammy Hagar, Burton Cummings with the Burton Cummings Band and more are set to Rock the Park this weekend in London, Ontario.

07/24-26 London, ON – Harris Park

Rockstar Mayhem Festival

While some metal festival tours have gone under (or at least downsized) — see Sounds of the Underground and Ozzfest — the Rockstar Mayhem Festival is still flourishing. Joining headliners Avenged Sevenfold and Korn will be plenty of bands touring new albums or promoting upcoming ones, including Cannibal Corpse, Body Count, Suicide Silence, Miss May I, Darkest Hour and more. You might really need one of those energy drinks to sustain all the head-banging.

07/26 Toronto, ON – Molson Canadian Amphitheatre
