Mac DeMarco Explains "Hockey Town" Edmonton on Marc Maron's 'WTF' Podcast

He's also shared the new track "One More Love Song" and wants you to write fan fiction about him

Mac DeMarco's upcoming This Old Dog LP may have taken its inspiration from the musician's recent move to Los Angeles, but he's proven that he hasn't forgotten about his Edmonton roots in a new interview. The Canadian songster sat down with Marc Maron on the latest episode of WTF, and they went delved deep into DeMarco's life story.

During their conversation, DeMarco explained the Texas-like (but "even crazier") influence of oil in Alberta and discussed growing up in his less-than-progressive "hockey town." Naturally, the ever-astounding West Edmonton Mall — and its "subterranean penguin raves" — gets brought up.

DeMarco also gets at his familial roots, talking about his grandmother's opera career, his dad's reaction to recent single "My Old Man" and his grandfather's successful stint as a saxophonist.

Later in the episode, Maron also chats with Mark Lanegan. You can listen to and download the whole thing over here.

UPDATE (4/27, 1:15 p.m. EDT): DeMarco has now also shared the new track "One More Love Song," which you can listen to below. Amazingly, DeMarco has also put a call out for you to write fan fiction about him.

A press release has announced the following: "The Mac DeMarco Fan Club (now over 10,000 members worldwide) is announcing new sign-up, renewal and year-end perks for paid memberships in 2017 plus its first ever contest — the Mac DeMarco Fan Fiction contest. Information on the Fan Fiction Contest and more is available here — www.mac-demarco.com/news."

DeMarco's This Old Dog is due out May 5 via Captured Tracks/Royal Mountain Records. Of course, you can read Exclaim!'s cover story with DeMarco by picking up the latest issue across Canada now.
