You may know Toronto's Handlebar for its beer, booze and bikes, but did you know the Kensington Market staple is also a haven for live music? In addition to late-night dance parties, open mics and shows, the long-standing venue has also become an incubator for local video performance series, the Coost.
Now in its fourth season, the Coost's Handlebar Sessions — sponsored by Karbon Brewing — have hosted 10-plus musicians throughout the pandemic, offering professional-grade concert recordings from Techno Westerns, Angelina Mackinnon, Quarterback, Maddee and many more.
A vessel for showcasing the stories, art and ideas of real people, the Coost is conducted through "interviews, videos and live events. None of these people pay to be showcased by the Coost. These are not commercials. In each case, we've heard about what these people are achieving and felt the need to shout from the rooftops about their passion, their projects, and their talent."
The entirety of the Handlebar Sessions archive is available to stream via the Coost's YouTube. Once you've delved into the recordings, you can also catch Coost artists live at the venue. Having just performed for the Handlebar Sessions earlier this month, Just Prince is due to return to the stage on Thursday (March 2) with special guests Kafayé and Paula Sofia.
