Hand Drawn Dracula's 'In Utero' Tribute to Receive Cassette Release for Black Friday

BY Alex HudsonPublished Nov 21, 2013

This fall, Toronto label Hand Drawn Dracula released Milkin' It, a tribute to Nirvana's 20-year-old classic album In Utero featuring covers by some of the city's best indie acts. Following the prior digital-only release, the album is slated to receive a cassette release for Record Store Day's Black Friday event on November 29.

Greys and the Wooden Sky helped to co-curate the collection, and they recruited contributors like Teenanger, Odonis Odonis, Hooded Fang, Absolutely Free, the Weather Station, Lowell Sostomi of Great Bloomers, Doomsquad, Fresh Snow & Julie Fader, HSY, Breeze and others. There are 16 covers in total: the 12 songs from the original Nirvana album and four B-sides from the era.

The tapes will be sold at select Toronto record stores during the day of November 29. That night, they will be available for a release show at the city's Unloveable. Admission is free, as are the tapes (while supplies last), and the show will feature DJ sets from Greys and the Wooden Sky (get more info about the event here).

According to an announcement, "The compilation exists primarily for two reasons, the first being to take a snapshot of a particularly fertile, vital moment in Toronto's musical history which, for all we know, may be inspiring a younger generation as it happens. The second, of course, is simply to pay tribute to three guys from a rainy corner of the continent who first inspired us to do what we do."
