Simply Saucer formed more than 40 years ago, and luckily for fans, the Hamilton proto-punk band have reunited in recent years. Now the group are set to return to the recorded realm with Baby Nova, a new EP that will be out on June 24 through Schizophrenic Records.
The five songs were recorded at Ghetto Recorders in Detroit, with Jeff Meier (Detroit Cobras) handling production. They used vintage analogue equipment and the band reportedly returned to their raw roots. Initial sessions took place in August 2011, with overdubs completed with Steve Foster at Napier Park Studio in Hamilton.
In a statement, frontman Edgar Breau referred to this as a "CanUSA fusion record" and said, "With the addition of composer/arranger/session musician and bona fide Detroit legend McKinley Jackson on keyboards on a couple of tracks, Simply Saucer went further and deeper into the 'Detroit Sound' to the soul/funk roots that had so influenced bands like Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, the MC5 and the Stooges."
Below, listen to Baby Nova's lead-off cut "Low Profile." As promised, there's a soul undercurrent, with an intro rhythm that sounds a bit like an extremely sinister interpretation of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back." Once it gets going, it's a Stooges-esque smasher.
Simply Saucer will celebrate the release with a launch party/meet-and-greet on June 28 at Hammer City Records in Hamilton. More release and live events are set to be announced shortly.
