Grizzly Bear Talk About "Poppy" Next Album, Radiohead Tour

As Grizzly Bear gear up to join Radiohead on the road, the Brooklyn foursome have booked three weeks of studio time to get to work on their "poppy” new album. While talking to Billboard, singer/guitarist Edward Droste revealed that this time out fans can expect a more much optimistic effort than 2006’s modern-day classic, Yellow House, with the mood being "slightly more a sunny afternoon versus a fall afternoon.”

"I think we're all in a really poppy place for sure," Droste said. "There are dark lyrics in play, and it's not like the whole album is going to be an up-tempo radio pop thing at all. We'll probably never get played on the radio, but [on] just a couple of the songs the mood is perhaps a bit sunnier than Yellow House."

According to the group, the new yet-to-titled album will likely be out sometime in April 2009, and will feature both the the upbeat "While You Wait for the Others," which Grizzly Bear recently performed on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and the tentatively titled "Two Weeks," which the band will play live July 23 on Late Show with David Letterman.

"It's really weird and confusing because it's funny to me we're playing Letterman right now when we have nothing in the stores that's even remotely new," Droste said. "The newest thing would be the EP [Friend] from last November. So I guess we're doing it just to promote the Radiohead tour."

As for being Radiohead’s warm-up act, Droste told Billboard he was unsure why Grizzly Bear were chosen for the opening slot, but sounded pumped to fill it nonetheless. "I really feel like — for me — it's the ultimate opportunity to be able to tour with Radiohead," he said. "Like, it's crazy to me. I grew up listening to them and respect them so much. It's kind of insane. [But] I think we'll be playing to a bunch of people who are getting beer and finding their seats."
