Grimes Says Her New Album Is Her Best Yet, Reiterates That She Wants to Die on Mars

She also says she recently finished the last song for the follow-up to 2020's 'Miss Anthropocene'

Before Grimes brought her sword-wielding fashion statement to this year's Met Gala, she made a whole bunch of other statements in a 'get ready with me' style video for Vogue. She talked about her new album, her son, and — because it wouldn't be a Grimes interview without it — going to Mars.

"I'm hoping to die on Mars, that would be my goal," she says in the video's opening seconds. "But I probably won't go to space till I'm like, 50?"

In the clip, she also discusses her difficulty in identifying with motherhood, saying that her son, X Æ A-Xii, calls her by her birth name, Claire, instead of mom. "Maybe he can sense my distaste for the word mother," she says. "I can't identify with it, weirdly."

Grimes also talked about her upcoming follow-up to 2020's Miss Anthropocene, and she sounds pretty confident about it.

"I'm just finishing an album, and I think it is by far my greatest work that I've ever done. I actually just made the last song for it, like, two nights ago," she says in the clip.

"I think I went into this like, 'I'm going to sign to a major label, and I'm going to be a really big artist' and all this stuff," she continued. "And then in that process, I started being like, 'No.' I just literally don't care if anyone listens to this shit. I just want it to be, like, great. I want it to be unequivocally great art."

Grimes has already revealed quite a lot about the new record, previously calling it a "Lesbian AI Space Opera" and teasing some new tracks
