Grammys Play It Safe with Nods to Beyoncé, Black Eyed Peas and, Um, Lonely Island
As is customary this time of year, the folks of the Recording Academy have put their brains together and come up with their list of nominees for the 52nd annual Grammy Awards. And, as always, the list proves that they don't like to rock the boat with their listening choices.

The list, which covers albums released from October 1 of 2008 through August 31 of 2009, is chock full of big sellers and safe choices. Beyoncé leads the group, with ten nominations for her lukewarm I Am... Sasha Fierce album. Other big prospects include Taylor Swift, Black Eyed Peas, Kings of Leon and a plethora of other artists that likely count your parents among their fans.

Thankfully, there are a few interesting choices in the mix. The award for best new artist could go to MGMT, the Ting Tings or Silversun Pickups. And the award for best alternative music album could go to Death Cab For Cutie, Phoenix, David Byrne and Brian Eno, or Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Canadian boy wonder Drake is amongst those up for best rap solo performance for his epic "Best I Ever Had." It appears, however, that the award committee was running out of ideas in the rap section, as the Lonely Island's goofy collaboration with T-Pain, "I'm On a Boat," was nominated for the best rap/sung collaboration. Sure, the song was amazing, but is that some kind of joke?

The big award noms are below for your perusal. If you want to subject yourself to the mammoth list in its entirety, click here. The Grammy Awards ceremony will take place on January 31.
