Published Dec 08, 2010The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of emotions for Gorillaz fans, as musical mastermind Damon Albarn promised a new album, unveiled a digital advent calendar, and then hinted at the group's breakup (all the while rolling out a new music video). Now, the band have revealed that the new album will be the free giveaway behind the final door on the advent calendar, meaning that we will have it on Christmas Day.
"At the moment we've got an advent calendar on our website and there is a daily door that opens to reveal a gift," Gorillaz animator Jamie Hewlett told Perth Now [via Consequence of Sound]. "On Christmas Eve, a video for one of the new songs from the iPad album will be released. Then, on Christmas Day fans get the whole album downloaded to their computer for free as a gift."
The album was reportedly recorded on an iPad while Gorillaz were on tour in the U.S. this year. Albarn told the Aussie newspaper, "I literally made it on the road in America over a month. I didn't write it before, I didn't prepare it. I just did it day by day as a kind of diary of my experience in America."
Albarn is rushing this release because he wants fans to know that the album was created entirely while on the road, without any additional edits. He said, "If I left it until the new year to release it, then the cynics out there would say, 'Oh well, it's been tampered with,' but if I put it out now they'd know that I haven't done anything because I've been on tour ever since."
Albarn previously said, "It's basically a tour diary as a record, I guess it's my love letter to America."
Gorillaz' last currently scheduled tour date is on December 21 in Auckland, New Zealand.
