First up is Sally Potter's coming of age story, Ginger & Rosa (pictured). The film is set in the '60s and follows Ginger (Elle Fanning), a wannabe activist, and Rosa (Alice Englert), Ginger's religious, yet overtly sexual, best friend. The film constantly challenges the characters' beliefs and role models, causing the girls (Ginger especially) to re-evaluate their worldview. The theme is not unfamiliar, but has Potter managed to create something that transcends it? Read our review to find out.
There's been a lot of talk about Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers, the story of four college girls (Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine) who rob a diner to fund their spring break trip to Florida and end up in jail, only to be "rescued" by a rapper named Alien (James Franco). The film is "almost like a stoner version of cult classic Heathers" that may or may not shock you.
Then there's G.I. Joe: Retaliation by Jon M. Chu. While you may have had high hopes for this old-school action film, it may not live up to expectations. The film does feature noteworthy actors Dwayne Johnson (Snitch) and Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street), but does this buddy comedy only elicit a few cheap laughs?
Peter Webber's Emperor is both historically and politically conscious of the Pearl Harbour attack and Emperor Hirohito's involvement. The film assumes its audience already has an understanding of WWII, and instead focuses on the different ideologies between America and Japan.
Last up is Cristian Mungiu's Beyond the Hills, based on a true story about an attempted exorcism. The story follows a nun, Voichita, (Cosmina Stratan) and her ex-lover, Alina, (Cristina Flutur) who plan to help Voichita get out of Romania.
