Future Islands Return with 'The Far Field' Album, Stream "Ran"

BY Brock ThiessenPublished Feb 1, 2017

Following breakthrough success of their 2014 LP Singles, Future Islands are returning to us with a much-needed new album. Titled The Far Field, the synth-loving Baltimore trio's new full-length will arrive on April 7 via 4AD.

The album will mark the fifth full-length studio effort from the trio of Samuel T. Herring, William Cashion and Gerrit Welmers. Right now, you can already get an idea of what to expect from the record with the sky-reaching new song "Ran," which you can listen to here via the streaming service of your choice or down at the bottom of the page.

Future Islands began writing the follow-up to Singles in January 2016 on the North Carolina coast and, before long, their hometown of Baltimore. They also roadtested the tracks by playing a series of secret shows under fake names, a press release reveals, eventually taking the songs to producer John Congleton to record at the famed Sunset Sound.

The press release goes on to promise the introduction of string and horn arrangements by Patrick McMinn, as well as live drums by Michael Lowry — making for the first Future Islands record to ever feature a human behind a live kit. The Far Field also boats a guest vocal appearance from Blondie's Debbie Harry, who sings on the album's "Shadows."

The album is also described like this:

Across The Far Field's 12 chest-pounding love songs and odes to the road, Future Islands brilliantly expresses the band's central themes they've been exploring for the last decade: that there is power in emotional vulnerability, that one can find a way to laugh and cry in the same breath — and be stronger for it.

You can pre-order the album here digitally, on 180-gram vinyl (both white and black), CD, cassette and a "one-of-a-kind miniature LP."

Future Islands have a series of dates coming up in support of the album. These include a sole Canadian date in Toronto on May 27. You can see the complete schedule below the album's tracklist.
