Former Best Coast/Vivian Girls Member Ali Koehler Starts Band with Hole's Patty Schemel

Ali Koehler has previously served time behind the kit in both Vivian Girls and Best Coast, and she has also shared a few solo tracks. Now, the drummer-turned-singer is fronting her own band, and she has some high-profile players backing her up.

Koehler will be singing and playing guitar in a four-piece called Upset. In a tweet, Koehler revealed that the band also features former Hole drummer Patty Schemel, who was the subject of the recent rock doc Hit So Hard. The lineup is rounded out by lead guitarist Jennifer Prince and bassist Chris Roberts.

Upset's first show takes place a week today (January 15) at the Echo in Los Angeles. Koehler noted that Upset don't yet have any recordings.

If her previous solo tracks are any indication, she favours indie pop ditties that balance twee sweetness with rough-around-the-edges grit. Hear those solo tunes below, but be forewarned that these are stripped-down demos rather than full-band performances, so they probably won't sound too much like Upset.
