"Two Headed Dog (Red Temple Prayer)" (Roky Erickson cover) (live on 'Austin City Limits')

Dave Grohl is quickly becoming one of rock music's most enthusiastic historians, so it's no surprise that Foo Fighters have covered Roky Erickson's "Two Headed Dog (Red Temple Prayer)" for Austin City Limits' upcoming 40th anniversary special.

In Grohl's hands, these riffs have the crunch that's pure Foos. Still, this cover is a faithful one, as the vocalist dutifully recreates the 13th Floor Elevators' frontman's bluesy howl. As Grohl points out in a spoken intro, Erickson hails from Austin, making this cover all the more appropriate.

Check it out below. Austin City Limits' 40th anniversary show will air on October 3 on PBS.

The Foos will release their album Sonic Highways on November 10. Their HBO TV show of the same name premieres on October 17.
