The Flaming Lips

U.F.O.s at the Zoo

BY Cam LindsayPublished Sep 20, 2007

Although Mars is likely the number one place fans would like to see the Flaming Lips perform at (maybe one day when the movie finally comes out), the Oklahoma City Zoo in their hometown is a pretty close second. This DVD is the next best thing to being there, as the wonky DIY production gives it a rightful Lips-y feel, highlighting the multi-camera angles that capture all of the giant balloons and streamers, dancing aliens and of course, Wayne Coyne emerging from a massive UFO in his man-sized bubble. Fans are interviewed — some are even selected to join in onstage in costume — to show the impact a gig of such proportions has, while intimate animal and stage assembly footage are interspersed. Sadly, no live animals end up in the performance, but that’s most likely a good thing, considering the radical freak-outs they have on stage. The recording sounds great, so good in fact that the band include downloadable MP3s for your audio pleasure. In one word, magical.
