Guelph, ON's Hillside Festival is an event that few people go to only once. The welcoming energy on Guelph Lake Island has made it a summer tradition for many in Southern Ontario — including many Exclaim! staffers.
This year marks the fest's 42nd iteration, and it runs from July 18 to 20. Weekend and day passes are on sale now — get more information on Hillside's website, and check out five of the shows we'll be sure not to miss below, featuring Hillside victory laps, an Afrobeat juggernaut and more.
Absolute Losers
The PEI post-punks are high energy and no-nonsense, bringing a pop sensibility to cut through their straightforwardness. You'll already be a little sweaty from the summer heat — so what's getting a little sweatier?
Bibi Club
The crown jewel of Hillside 2023's first night returns for a victory lap. The Montreal duo's raw chemistry is best showcased on stage, complete with intimate stares, percussive precision and earworm guitar riffs.
DijahSB
The Toronto rapper is making the rounds on the festival circuit this summer. Expect bars that slide between introspective and bombastic, and approachable confidence as they move across the stage.
Femi Kuti & the Positive Force
The son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti is, of course, an accomplished musician in his own right. Energetic choreography, sax solos and upbeat polyrhythms are all landmarks of his live show.
Hurray for the Riff Raff
Hurray! Alynda Segarra slides through folk, Americana and punk — all genre indicators of a Happy Hillside.
