Father John Misty Details 'I Love You, Honeybear' LP, Announces North American Tour Dates

Former Fleet Foxes drumming dude Joshua Tillman barely needs an introduction as Father John Misty after the acclaim of 2012's Fear Fun. And now, under that same moniker, the folk-tinged songwriter has announced plans for a follow-up record.

Appearing as the musical guest on The Late Show with David Letterman last night (November 3), Tillman revealed that a new full-length titled I Love You, Honeybear will be arriving on February 10 via Sub Pop.

The new album was recorded with producer Jonathan Wilson, and though it is said to sound akin to solo-era John Lennon, Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson, Tillman also drew inspiration from figures like Woody Allen, Kurt Vonnegut, Alejandro Jodorowski and Muhammad Ali.

"It has a decidedly more soulful presence than Fear Fun, due in no small part to the fact that I am truly singing my ass off all over this motherfucker," he said in a press release. "The album is really characterized by the scope and ambition of the arrangements. Nearly every tune is augmented by something special, be it orchestral strings, a mariachi band, questionable electronic drum solos, ragtime jazz combos, soul singers, or what have you. I'm pretty sure there's a sitar in there somewhere."

As previously reported, it's a semi-autobiographical concept album about a guy that engages in regrettable behaviour, but begins to change upon falling in love with a lady named Emma. Forgoing the cliché of total transformation, Tillman realized that "the best love can be is finding someone who is miserable in the same way you are."

As for his Letterman performance, a spiffy-looking Tillman delivered new single "Bored in the USA" from his piano bench before taking the mic for a stroll — all the while backed by a 22-piece string section.

When Tillman takes the album on tour in the new year, he'll be joined by a seven-piece band. The tour kicks off mid-January in California, but will make its way to Canada for dates in Montreal on February 16 and Toronto on February 17.
