Fan Death

"Veronica's Veil"

Upon first listen, I'd likely bet all my marbles that London's Fan Death were the latest new thing signed to Mike Simonetti's Italians Do It Better imprint, considering they share that dreamy disco sound with the ever so cherished Glass Candy and Chromatics. But they're not.

Instead, this duo (named after a a South Korean urban legend surrounding the dangers of leaving your electric fan running overnight) are the latest new thing signed to Phantasy Sounds, the label founded by "the UK's favourite DJ" and burgeoning super-producer Erol Alkan. I didn't even realize he had a label, so discovering the two at once doubles the pleasure.

Fan Death are just the sort of act I'd expect Erol to fawn over. Two gorgeously stylish women with a fondness for unicorns and The NeverEnding Story's Falcor who churn out retro-futuristic disco with a high-fashion shimmer. New single "Veronica's Veil" winks both at the synthetic orchestras that built mainstream disco acts like ABBA and Chic, as well as the other end of the spectrum, with electro slides towards the Italo end. As glamorous as it sounds, it's also surprisingly seedy, in a deliciously scandalous way. I can imagine they're quite the entertainers.

To boot, I've also included a link to the "rework" Alkan himself did that extends the length and shifts around the rhythm.
